Fiberglass is a type of inorganic material which can be combined with chemical resins such as polyester resin, epoxy resin to produce fiberglass reinforce plastic (FRP). The glass fiber material is characterized by low density, lightweight, good toughness, corrosion resistance, not easy to aging, etc.
Fiberglass reinforced plastic is a new material which can be used in shipbuilding industry. It is mainly used in the manufacture of hull shells. It can be made into ships with the displacement usually less than 500t, such as landing craft, traffic boats, civilian high-speed passenger boats, fishing boats, yachts, lifeboats, work boats and racing boats. Because the fiberglass material is light in weight, it can reduce the weight of the hull shells, thus improve the buoyancy of the hull and the sailing speed of the ship. Fiberglass is a good corrosion resistant material, so it can protect the hull and various marine equipments and greatly extend the service life under the harsh conditions at sea. At the same time, the excellent corrosion resistance of the glass fiber materials can reduce the maintenance and repair costs of the hull.
Large ships are made from steel. They are usually manufactured in big shipyards. There is lot of welding work to do in the shipyards in order to ensure the structural safety and the strength of the large ships. When welders are doing the welding work, the welding sparks are easily to burn them and make them injury. In order to protect the welding workers from the injury cause by the welding sparks, welding blankets processed from glass fibre cloth are usually used. Fiberglass cloth is a high temperature resistant material which can withstand 550 degrees C. The welding blankets made from fiberglass cloth can block the welding sparks. Large pieces of fiberglass cloth without processing also can be used as welding blankets to cover on the sites where welding work needs to be done. The use of unprocessed fiberglass cloth as the welding blankets saves cost and protects the welders as well as the other equipments on the site.
