Glass fiber is an inorganic non-metallic material. It takes waste glass or quartz sand as the main raw materials. By heating at high temperature, the raw materials become molten liquid which is then sprayed out through very small holes and quickly cooled into very thin filaments called glass fiber or fiberglass. Glass is a safety material. Our glass cups, eye glasses and glass windows are all made of glass. They have no harm to our health and environment at all. Glass fiber has the same raw material as glass products, so it is also no harm to our environment and health. Glass fiber itself is a safety material, but during the production and handling, it will generate dust and small particles. We need wear protective equipments when operating it. Glass fiber has no odor, no color and no toxicity with the advantages of lightweight, high tensile strength, high temperature resistance, anti-corrosion property, electric insulation property and can be extensively used in many fields.

By spinning process, glass fiber is processed into glass fiber yarn which can be further made into fiberglass products such as fiberglass textiles, non-woven fiberglass mat, fiberglass tissue and so on. The typical fiberglass textiles are fiberglass woven roving, fiberglass cloth, fiberglass tapes and fiberglass ropes.

‌Glass fiber woven roving, fiberglass mat and tissue are excellent composite materials. They can be combined with chemical resins to manufacture fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP). FRP products are light weight and high strength. They are extensively used in aviation, marine, automobile, petrochemical, electrical and many other fields.

Glass fiber is a high temperature resistant material. Fiberglass textiles can resist high temperatures from 350 ℃ to 550 ℃. Due to high temperature resistance, glass cloth can be made into welding blanket, fireproof curtains, fireproof clothing, fireproof gloves, etc. Fiberglass cloth and fiberglass tapes can wrap hot steam pipes to prevent heat loss from hot pipes and save heat energy. Fiberglass cloth is also an excellent material for making removable insulation jacket, fabric expansion joints, etc.

Glass fiber is non-metallic material, so it does not rot and rust. It is an excellent corrosion resistance material which can resist many chemical substances such as acid, alkali, organic solvent and so on. With the fine chemical resistance property, glass fiber can be made into chemical equipments such as storage tanks, chemical reactors, anti-corrosion gratings and so on. Fiberglass cloth and fiberglass tapes can wrap around petrochemical pipelines to protect the pipes from corrosion and extend their service life.

Glass fiber has electrical insulation properties. E-glass cloth is a superior electrical insulation material that can be used in electric insulation field. It can be made into electrical insulation parts and used as electric insulation material to cover and wrap electric motors, electrical cables and so on.

Glass fiber was invented in the 1940s. With the continuous research and development, its quality has been greatly improved and its usages are wider and wider day by day. Glass fiber has high strength and can replace many metals. It greatly saves natural resources and plays an important role in our life.
